Summary of Events

On November 18, 2024, United States Marshal Service Deputy Marshal Christopher Alstrom attempted to serve a federal arrest warrant on James Vanest at Rodeway Inn Room #220. Upon using a key to open the door, Alstrom observed Vanest pointing a firearm directly at him through a small gap. Officers retreated and requested Canton Regional SWAT. During the standoff, officers deployed chemical munitions and a drone into the room. Vanest shot the drone down. Vanest subsequently fired at officers, striking a North Canton Police officer in the arm. Nine SWAT officers returned fire. Vanest was located deceased inside the room holding a firearm. Officers rendered aid, and Vanest was pronounced dead.
